MercuryFacts.org is a project of the Center for Consumer Freedom, a nonprofit coalition dedicated to promoting personal responsibility and protecting consumer choices.

A growing cabal of environmental activist groups, public health researchers, and government bureaucrats are using junk science to needlessly frighten Americans about the fish they eat. This scam has very little public opposition, but we're here to set the record straight.

  • So what exactly is "consumer freedom"?
Consumer freedom is the right of adults and parents to choose what they eat and drink, and how they enjoy themselves. It also includes the freedom from junk science, agenda-driven food scares, and deceptively inflated statistics about supposed "dangers" in the food we eat.

  • Do you have a bias?
Yes! We believe that only you know what's best for you. When activists twist science or ignore important facts to enforce their vision of society on others, we don’t take it lying down.

  • Does that mean you're against vegetarians?
Of course not! Everyone should have the right to make their own choices about what to eat and drink -- whether or not that includes seafood. Everyone's personal choices should be respected. All we ask in return is that the vegetarian minority resist the temptation to "convert" the rest of us.

  • But you are opposed to "good" groups. Doesn't that make you the "bad guys"?
We speak up whenever activists propose curtailing consumer freedom, and we aren't afraid to take on groups that have built "good" images through slick public relations campaigns. Just because they claim to be "ethical" or "responsible" or "in the public interest" doesn't mean they are. And when they twist the truth in order to scare the fish right off your plate, we make sure you know about it.

  • Who funds you guys? How about some "full disclosure"?
The Center for Consumer Freedom is supported by restaurants, food companies and more than 1,000 concerned individuals. From farm to fork, our friends and supporters include businesses, employees and consumers. The Center is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation. We file regular statements with the Internal Revenue Service, which are open to public inspection.

  • I'm from the media. How do I contact you?
    Just call 202-463-7112 ext 133.
